Hutchinson Sports Arena

Photo of Front of BuildingOpened before the 1951-52 basketball season, the Hutchinson Sports Arena quickly became the mecca of junior college basketball, serving as the host venue for the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament since 1952 and remains so today.

The Sports Arena has also been home to Blue Dragon men’s basketball since the 1951-52 season. Beginning in 1974, Blue Dragon women’s basketball moved in and 1977, Blue Dragon volleyball made the Arena home after three seasons at the Hutchinson National Guard Armory.

The Sports Arena, now at 6,500 for capacity, was renovated for the first time in 1981. In 2015, voters were asked to approve a city sales tax increase that would fund a $29.5 million renovation to the Arena that will improve the building’s infrastructure, add three new practice gyms, and re-do the Sports Medicine office, weight room, locker rooms, NJCAA Office and Blue Dragon Athletic office.

The scheduled completion of the renovation is April 2017. In addition to the NJCAA men’s basketball tournament, the renovated Sports Arena will be the home of the 2017, 2018 and 2019 NJCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championships.
